Anweshan 2016
Anwehsa Kolkata –
an association of parents and well wishers of children & persons with
hearing impairment celebrated its 11th annual awareness programme “Anweshan 2016” on 28th September 2016 at Rotary
Sadan. The show comprised colourful programmes like dance by little
children, skit, Discussion session on Communication options for children with
hearing impairment, beautifully displayed mime by renowned artist Sri Suvendu
Mukhopadhay and musical performance by singer Sri Gautam Das Baul.
The programme commenced with
the welcome dance by children with hearing impairment sharp at 6.00 p.m. The
dazzling display of dance by children with perfect steps to the tune and rhythm
kept the audience glued to the seats. Sri Debasish Kumar, Member,
Mayor-in-Council, Kolkata Municipal Corporation, Special Guest, delivered a brief
speech on the occasion and conveyed his best wishes for the success of the
programme.
Smt Snigdha Sarkar,
President, Anwesha Kolkata gave a presentation titled “A Glimpse of
Anwesha’s Journey of Twelve Years” before the audience. Then the children
from Anwesha put up an excellent show by presenting a skit on Durga Puja. It
was a visual delight.
Sri Subrata Banerjee,
Director, Pratibandhi Kalyan Kendra (PKK), Smt Sampa Nath, Senior Programme
Manager, Deaf Child Worldwide (DCW)-Asia, and Rotarian Rajkumar Aurora, Secretary
Rotary Club of Calcutta graced the programme as guests. They felicitated Mr. Achyut
Mukherjee, Mr. Anudeep Saha, Ms. Kaushani Ghatak and Ms. Debopriya Ghosh for
their achievement in academic fields and Mr. Tanuj Mukherjee for having
achieved a remarkable height in the field of sports, for winning Bronze in
Men’s Doubles in World Deaf Table Tennis Championship held recently in Samsun Turkey.
Seven parents, who successfully
completed the Parents Training Course, were awarded certificates. One mother
received the best parent award based on overall performance throughout the
year.
Post the felicitation,
guests were requested to speak. Smt Shampa Nath from DCW said a few words. She
expressed her happiness at meeting the children and at the commitment of the
parents. She marvelled that parents were doing so much work and in so many
spheres. Sri Subrata Banerjee, PKK a friend from the beginning, said that he
was happy to be a part of the programme and wished well for the organisation. Rotarian Rajkumar Aurora expressed his
pleasure at being able to be a part of the programme and wished well for the
organisation.
An interactive session on “Discussion
on Communication Options for children with hearing impairment” was held. Sri
Supriya Kumar, Technical Advisor, DCW moderated the programme. Smt
Tulika Das, Director, SANCHAR AROD, Sri
Arup Nandan Das Adhikary, Audiologist from Bengal Speech Hearing Pvt Ltd, Smt Sneha Das Gupta and Sri Suvrojyoti Sur, young adults with
deafness and Smt Snigdha Sarkar, President
Anwesha Kolkata comprised the panel.
Sri Supriya Kumar thereafter
asked Sri Suvrojyoti Sur and Smt Sneha Das Gupta to share their experience. Sri
Sur is a young adult who communicated through sign language. His signs were translated
into Bengali by Sign Language interpreter Smt Shubha Lahiri who was
interpreting the whole programme into sign language from the beginning. The
other mode that was used for convenience of deaf adults who did not use sign
language was speech to text by a friend volunteer simultaneously.
Smt Sneha Das Gupta is also a
young adult who used hearing aids and communicated orally and shared the difficulties she encountered in
school, college and all through her studies because she could not understand
the speech of the teachers. She said that if there were visual options such as
speech to text, close captioning of programmes on TV or at theatre hall, life
could be much easier for persons like her.
After the session, Ms. Kuhu Das, Director, AWWD, a friend
of Anwesha Kolkata for a long time, launched the souvenir published on the
occasion.
After a little pause, the
audience were mesmerized to see the wonderful mime act of Mr. Suvendu Mukhopadhyay. He beautifully portrayed the expression
& feelings of a person with disability. Mr. Probir Banik assisted him well and
presented a comedy on “Dentist and Patient” and the audience appreciated a lot
on spot.
Thereafter, Sri Gautam Das
Baul and his team presented baul songs which amazed each and everyone in the
hall. He and his team sang for a good three quarter of an hour.
Last but not the least, Ms.
Soma Ghosh, Secretary, Anwesha Kolkata offered vote of thanks and
acknowledged the contribution of all in making the programme a success
including thanking various sponsors. Without the financial support from the
following organizations, the programme could not run smoothly.
